Match Report: From the Irish Times (Thanks to Steve Bell for Report and teams etc)
"Having done more than most to help build Tolka Park, it is only right and proper that on nights like these Leeds United should virtually own the place. Once again the reverential fans came in their thousands to pay homage to Sergeant Wilko's men and once again they were not disappointed."
"As requested, Rod Wallace duly gave the 6,000 attendance two waves, and as a bonus, two goals; Lee Chapman gave them two waves and a goal while Eic Cantona gave them a clap and some lovely touches. The 'unknown' Shelbourne players were seemingly just there to make up the numbers though they did contribute in their usual inventive way to a fixture which seemingly will never tire nor never bore."
"Apart from each Manager experimenting with their utility midfielders Gary Speed and Greg Costello as centre halfs, the two sides bore very familiar looks. Neither player appeared totally happy in his new role, though Costello's effectiveness was more difficult to guage as he was largely a pawn in Shelbourne's oft-used offside trap."
"Shelbourne's overuse of the offside trap proved their undoing in the twenty-seventh minute when Cantona swivelled and played a delightful first-time ball over the advancing red line from inside halfway for Gary McAllister to glide forward and calmly sidefoot the ball past Jody Byrne."
"But Shelbourne struck back when Gary Howlett mystifyingly omitted from the League of Ireland selection, played a one-two with Padraig Dully before hitting the post from twenty-five yards and then Paul Doolin found Dully whose cross was converted by Gary Haylock's diving header in the thirty-third minute."
"However, within another four minutes, Leeds deservedly regained the lead to complete a fine first half. Resorting to their route one approach, goalkeeper John Lukic launched a free from halfway inside his own half which Cantona and Steve Hodge nodded on for Wallace to score with a first-time volley on the run."
"Chapman headed the English club's third goal in the sixty-sixth minute and Wallace added his second three minutes from time with a shot on the turn."
